International Trauma Life Support (ITLS): Advanced and Basic
Learn how to conduct a rapid assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, packaging, and transport of the trauma patient. Occupational Health Nurses needing Advanced First Aid should register for Accelerated Advanced First Aid for compliance with WH&S.

Material covered in this course:

The purpose of the ITLS course is to prepare emergency health care providers to knowledgeably and skillfully perform the rapid assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, packaging, and transport of the trauma patient. This course includes lectures, interactive skill stations, and a direct application and integration of knowledge and skills. The practical components utilize "real case based scenarios." Prior study of the text is required 1 month prior to course date.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be issued a ITLS provider card indicating registration as a ITLS provider in Alberta and with ITLS international.

Prerequisites required to take this course:
-Professional registration in one of the following categories:

-ITLS- Advanced Level: Paramedics, Registered Nurses, Physicians

-ITLS- Basic Level: Emergency Medical Technicians, Emergency Medical Responders, Licensed Practical Nurses, as well as those eligible to take the advanced level.

-With approval, eligible students may complete the course during the final year of their professional program. Provider cards will not be released to students who successfully complete the ITLS course until they provide professional registration documentation.

Please note the additional prerequisites:

-Current Basic Rescuer CPR Health Care Provider Level with AED certification
(within 1 years of date of issue)

-ITLS for Occupational Health Nurses, current CPR level C or HCP (Health Care Provider) with AED certification or ACLS certification, within 1 year from date of issue, to meet the requirements of Alberta Workplace Health and Safety
